King3 - Helicam - Jan 2010

Enjoying the experience of a better Collective Pitch Helicopter. Finding appropriate time practice is difficult with the current windy conditions in Melbourne.

Spent a week in Beechworth helping to build a Straw Bale house. Below is the Helicam of the experience. Very Windy conditions (more that 15 km/hour). Hovering was very difficult.

On one day the wind was so strong that when I lifted the heli to 1.5 metres the wind pushed it straight to the ground (minor crash as I tried to correct the heli - no damage).

This is the King3 with modified Loading Skids and Camera.

Found a spy camera on EBay for $16 AUS. It requires a Micro-SD card (had a an old 2g card). Takes videos 720x480. Very good quality.

Sample HQ quality (42 mb) - still lower than actual quality due to Blogger capability.

Low quality video of Thursdays progress on House. (15 mb)

King3 - Collective Pitch Helicopter

November 2009

I have finally moved to a Collective Pitch Helicopter.

After some searching on the net I finally found the new HoneyBee King3 2.4gh helicopter.

Again, I found it for a very good price. Delivered from Hong Kong at $185 Australian dollars.

My first impressions - I good helicopter. Glad I first started with a Fixed pitch helicopter. This one is different to take off and hovering can be controlled more. A different feel to the previous fixed pitch helicopter's. I expected it to be different and I am now getting used to this new helicopter. Lots more power, reaction to controls are slightly slower (I think this is because it is slightly bigger).

The brushless motor and longer flying time (due to better battery) make this a much better experience. Still practising in the backyard. Will go to the park when the weather is better, currently the wind is unpredictable. This helicoptor is more stable than the previous fixed pitch ones. (I assume this is due to Collective pitch, extra weight and better helicopter).

Walkera 4G1 - Modified Skids

LIFT PROBLEM

I had some problem with the helicopter NOT lifting off the ground (could only lift about 20cm). Checked everything I could and dismantled the blades, all the control linkages. Still no lift.

So I changed the motor thinking this had warn out. Still no improvement.

In the end I decided it had to be something to do with the electronics. I checked the receiver and moved the adjustment for mixing the tail motor to rotor control (added more to the rotor). This fixed the problem. So I can only assume that with the small crashes the electronic's some how needed re-adjustment. So now it lifts again.

NEW SKIDS

I have been practicing and finally have progressed to flying without the trainer's.

The original skids are weak and kept breaking. I have made my own slids to suit the Walkera 4g1.

I have taken skids from the Walkera 1#A and made them wider by spreading the legs using a heat gun. The 1#A skids are shorter than the 4G1. I have added an adapter made from 5cm round plastic water pipe. I cut two pieces and reshaped them with the heat gun (from a circle to a more rectangle shape). They needed to be wide enough to allow the battery to easily slide into the battery holder.

Now I have much stronger skids than before. (see photos).
