Walkera 4G1 - 24th August 2008

Given the problems I had with the Receiver of the Honey Bee FP.
(The motor has also now warn out). I needed a new 35mhz receiver.

After looking at the cost -the following are my options :-

1) buy a new 35mhz receiver and possibly still have interference
(est cost $100) .

2) buy a new Transmitter and Receiver of 2.4ghz.
The new 2.4ghz models claim little if any interference.

I found that a replacement 2.4ghz systems for the HB FP is not due until September at the earliest (est. cost $140).

3) buy a new helicopter with 2.4ghz Transmitter & receiver.

The new HBFP with 2.4ghz is about $183 (from Hong Kong)
or Walkera 4G1 is $134 (from Sydney).

So I have a Walkera 4G1 2.4ghz model.

Flying
Walkera 4G1.

My first impressions of the 4G1 Helicopter is that it is more robust that the HBFP for small crashes. Nothing happens to the Helicopter (I think its because it so light - I have rolled it a few times from 300cm height). The Transmitter is very sloppy in its feel of the controls. The HB FP has a much better feel on the controls.

As a helicopter to learn on - I believe the 4G1 is equal or better than the HB FP Helicopter. However, the sloppy feel of the controls will be a problem for a learner - The springs on the 4G1 transmitter need to be stronger. (at some stage I will open the Transmitter and see if I can improve the feel).

So for now - I am enjoying the new Helicopter. With my new confidence I started going to the park to fly. I asked Samantha the come and video me as Brian keeps asking for videos of me crashing. Well I have something for you Brian.

The following videos are of my flying on Sunday 24th August (some light wind).

First Flight - it was short, something happened with the power (about 16mb).

Started the 4G1 again after landing and it worked fine!

The Second flight was much longer - not all of it is on the video (about 19mb).

Take note of the crash at the end of the video!

Photos after the crash.

I think the first crash broke the landing gear and pin on the rotor.

I did not notice the broken pin and tried to fly the heli and it rolled over and broke the blade.

I have ordered replacement parts.

The girls are paying for them - this will be my Father's Day present.

Wow - you are getting so advanced (well maybe not in the flying world but to a non heli girl!) and it sounds like you are having fun! Nice to see the girls involved :). I couldn't see the videos as I think my internet is too slow - but knowing you they'll be good! Keep flying and stock up on some parts :).

You call that a crash, let me at the controls and I will show you a crash :-)

Hey - I've just brought a 4G1B and I'm learning to fly as well.... tough isn't it? :)

I broke my front skid in the first place on my first flight just like you, but I taped it up and its still holding up. I've been flying my heli once or twice a day for nearly a week now, and my flying skills are coming along nicely - but still a LONG way to go :)

When things start to go pear shaped and I get too much bank on I tend to slam the throttle shut which isn't necessarily a good thing as I then have no control.

Last night I broke a blade, now I'm waiting on parts. Apparently East Coast Hobbies will be getting some superskids in for the 4G1, I'll grab a set as they look much mroe sturdy than the originals.
